Lucifer (TV)

I'm in two minds as to whether to carry on with this TV series beyond the first episode. Don't get me wrong, it's entirely watchable.The premise is intriguing for anybody who likes a bad boy: Lucifer is sick of hell, so he comes to live in Los Angeles and ends up helping the police department solve crimes, He has a cool superpower: people tell him their most secret desires. Except this superpower doesn't work on the police detective, which makes this a perfect setup for romantic tension.

Still, episode one didn;t give me any impression of a bigger story. Sure, those in power want him back in hell where he is needed. But the whole thing has a formulaic feel to it.

Happy to be proved wrong.

He's Just Not That Into You (2009)

 He's Just Not That Into You is a 2009 movie that deserves more than the 3 stars it got on imdb.com. The movie is fun and easy to watch, while conveying a series of powerful messages: if a boy punches you it doesn't mean he likes you, if a boy doesn't call you he probably isn;t that into you, and if a boy stays with you and loves you for years he's a keeper.

The powerful cast of Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Conneli make it a memorable movie, perfect for a girls' night in.

Fangirl

Here's another book by Rainbow Rowell. Unlike "Landline", "Fangirl" is more of a young adult read (first year of college, with swear words). It's cool. Interesting backstories, quirky plot turns. For those of you you've read it, I especially enjoyed the fanfic side of the story, where I kept picturing Harry Potter in love with what-his-face Malfoy, Draco.

Landline

"Landline" by Rainbow Rowell is mostly a romance with a hint of SF or the supernatural. A satisfying Christmas read.

Andy’s first and only dog was called Tigger, and he never wanted another. Tigger was Andy’s present for his fifth birthday, the one with the gingerbread man birthday cake. Tigger saved Andy’s life four years later when Andy got a cramp swimming in the river behind their house.

I feel for Tigger. When I saved somebody’s life, I received this wheelchair in exchange.... But at least I got to live. Tigger wasn’t so lucky.

You might say it’s not much of a life I have, but—considering the alternative—I like it fine the way it is. Which brings me to the dilemma at hand: Andy wants us to get married. If I accept, my life—which I like fine as it is—would not stay as it is.
