Speed Dating In The Cold - Excerpt

"Speed Dating In The Cold" by Eve Summers

EXCERPT

I can’t help the question. “How old are you?”

“Of legal age,” one of his dark eyebrows goes up, “and then some in experience. In case you’re wondering.”

We’re on the same wavelength, all right. Before I can stop him, though, the stranger and his jacket are gone.

“Here for the Speed Dating Evening?” The guy who welcomes me has hair that’s not too short and lips that aren’t too prominent and perfectly chiselled cheeks. When he leans in, I catch a whiff of aftershave too gorgeous to be cheap. I fill in the paperwork while my subconscious longs for the scent of fresh pine.

Stupid. Where would I look for Mr. Of Legal Age And Then Some?

Someone taps his folder. “Let’s get started.”

About time, too. Nobody in Anchorage obeys the clock. They think that’s a good thing.

“Remember the rules, folks. Girls remain at their tables. Boys rotate clockwise when the melody sounds.”

My first bachelor is the organizer. The one of perfect hair and lips and cheeks.

“Are you just making up the numbers?” If he’s available, I want to know, even if he looks nothing like my jacket–bearing stranger.

“I’m not just making up the numbers. I want a date as much as everybody else here. Tell me what movies you like.”

We talk movies and books and holiday destinations. He enjoyed Inception, which I found too cerebral. He doesn’t read fiction. We both wish we could be in Hawaii right now, which means we do have something in common.

“I hate Anchorage,” he minces the word like a piece of offal.

Not good. I change tack. “What do you do for work?”

We do the other twenty–one questions straight off the website titled “The 25 Best Speed Dating Questions You Can Ask A Prospective Date.” He must have Googled them too, for his answers are ice–smooth.

All too soon, the switchover song chimes. Snow Patrol. Apt.

Bachelor Number Two has the fashion sense of a computer geek, and he is indeed more into flash drives than flash personalities. Still, we have a nice enough time until –

Guest Post by Laura Breck

Thanks so much, Eve, for letting me guest blog today. My second release from Red Rose Publishing, Scandalous L.A. Desires, is available now. It's the second book in the series after Secret Vegas Lives, which was released in 2009.

I'm going to let everyone in on a secret. Scandalous L.A. Desires was the first book I wrote. It ended up the second book in the series because I wasn't able to find it a home way back in 2008. As so many authors know, that first book is always about finding your voice and learning about what agents and publishers want.

I wrote Secret Vegas Lives next, setting it as the first book in the series, and featuring Dante (the hero from Scandalous L.A. Desires) in a quick appearance toward the end of the book, knowing that if I found a publisher for Vegas, I would rewrite LA as the second book.

I did find Red Rose, who loved Secret Vegas Lives and asked for another book from me. How exciting! I rewrote Scandalous L.A. Desires as the second book, but being able to stand alone as well. The characters from Vegas appear in L.A. too, as well as another character who will appear in book three – to be written.

When I rewrote the L.A. book I had such a wonderful time using all the new tricks and skills I'd learned while writing and editing Vegas. Scandalous L.A. Desires is a much, much better book now than it was in 2008.

I enjoy spotlighting social issues in my books. Scandalous L.A. Desires tackles marginalized inner city youth and lets my characters show their commitment to change throughout the pages of the books.

That's definitely who I am, also. I grew up in a home where giving and sharing were daily lessons. Volunteering, donating, and compassion were stressed as strongly as academic and athletic achievement.

Proceeds from my writing sponsors projects in the cities they feature. I still volunteer, donate, and assist new authors as they stumble their way through the publishing maze. It's become a way of life for me, and I can't help but include it in my writing.

Here's the book blurb:

Lindsey Beauden earned her reputation as a conservative philanthropist and upstanding member of Los Angeles society. Artist Dante Daniato earned his reputation as one of LA’s most charming and eligible bachelors. Opposites attract, and when they meet at a gala fundraiser at the Getty Museum, the red-hot chemistry is immediate and intense. But an anonymous letter alerts Lindsey to the scandalous life Dante leads. When the board of her family foundation condemns his notoriety and withholds funding from the inner city art program he’s involved in, she cannot risk linking her name to his. She dissuades him despite the desire that shimmers through her at his every touch.

Intrigued, Dante finds her rejection a challenge and pursues her, intent on seduction. When he unexpectedly falls for the selfless beauty, she surrenders to him, and their hunger for sensual pleasures awakens the beast in him, and the vixen in her. But a sexy publicity stunt humiliates Lindsey and implicates Dante, and their perfect world is torn apart. Lindsey will not believe Dante when he swears his innocence, and he leaves the country, angry and distraught. When she uncovers the truth, she must follow him to Italy to beg his forgiveness, but has her distrust destroyed his love for her?

Adult R-Rated Excerpt:

“I'm nearly finished with your portrait.” Dante said. “Would you like to see it?”

“Oooh, yes, please.” Lindsey stood.

He carried their empty wine glasses into the kitchen, then sat on his tall painting stool in front of the portrait. When he pulled her close, he positioned her between his thighs, both of them facing the sketch.

The heat from his legs warmed her hips even through their clothes, and the intimate position set off tiny contractions in her core. She wanted to press her hands on his thighs, move her body back to feel every inch of him touching her back, her butt—

“What do you think?”

His question jolted her out of the fantasy, and when she looked at the sketch, she was shocked. The background was the gazebo at Disneyland. But it was her face that awed her.

“Oh, Dante. It's magnificent. It's me, but beautiful.”

“You are beautiful, cara mia. Your inner light, the one only I can see. You are an angel.”

“It's as if I'm more alive on paper. More real. The look in my eyes…”

He ran his hands up her arms to her shoulders and kissed her neck. “Powerful, isn't it? That's what I see when I look at you.”

Her heart suddenly beat faster and a bolt of uncertainty clenched her stomach. What he saw in her eyes, what he'd painted, she had no intention of showing him. Was she truly that seductive? No wonder he kept chasing her.

He pressed his lips to her ear and whispered, “Say the word and let me show you how perfect we are for each other.”

Still shaken by her transparent emotions, she had trouble finding her voice. She shook her head.

His hands slid down her arms, his lips brushed her shoulder. “It can be heaven for us. We can have it all.”

She gasped a breath, her head woozy. She should move away, but her body craved everything he was doing to her, her traitorous libido kicked in and sent a rush of desire through her veins. Between her legs, her body responded, hot and wet.

His voice was tortured. “Lindsey, angelo mio, I can smell your musk. You want this as much as I do.”

God, yes, she wanted it. The temptation made her knees shake, but she had to think rationally. “We're moving too fast, it's too soon.”

He gently bit her. “You feel it. You want it to carry you away. Let it. Let me.”

His words tore through her resistance, her body pulsed with excitement, but tears filled her eyes. “We should stop.”

His hands slid around to her stomach, held her tight, pressing his chest against her back, holding his erection against her bottom. “You don't want to stop, do you, bella?”

No, she didn't. She'd never felt this before. Every nerve in her body was hot and jittery, her mind spun in crazy circles, and her hips moved of their own accord in a primitive dance she couldn't stop.

His hand slid lower, his fingers sneaking under her waistband.

The pop of her snap coming undone was as loud as a clanging bell, and it brought her back from the edge. “No. I can't.” She grabbed his wrists, pulled his hands from her, and turned to face him. “You have to stop.”

He reached for her, his eyes red-hot with desire. “I want you, Lindsey. Admit you want me too.”

She wanted him, but she didn't know him. This was not who she was. Her heart contracted, a pain so visceral, it brought tears to her eyes. How could he break his promise? How could he pressure her like this?

“Dante,” she took a step back, felt a tear trace down her cheek. “Don't do this.”

He looked at the tear and jerked as if he'd been gut punched. “Oh, God.” He stood slowly, taking a deep breath. Gently he tucked her hair behind her ear, smoothing it down her back, then wrapped his hand around her arm. He was shaking.

“Forgive me. I lost control. I've never…never before you.” He closed his eyes, breathing deeply, slowly.

He would never hurt her, she knew this, but the man standing in front of her wasn't the charming playboy she'd been flirting with the last three weeks, this was the wolf. And she needed to get away from him. “I'm going to go.” She would call a cab.

He opened his eyes. “No, I'll drive you. I just need a minute.” He went into the bedroom.

She found her purse then went back and looked at the sketch. He'd drawn her so well it was like looking into a mirror. But she'd never seen that longing, steamy expression in her eyes. She looked like a woman…in love. Sucking in a startled breath, she let herself feel it, let the riptide pull her into deep waters.

Drowning, no fight left, resigned to her fate—she loved him.

I would love to hear how you make a difference in your world. Do you volunteer at your children's school? Donate old clothes? Mentor co-workers? What are the little things you do that you might not even realize are making a difference?

I will be giving away one e-copy of Secret Vegas Lives (Book 1 of the series) to a lucky commenter. Thank you for coming by today.

Mr Right Online - Release Date

Eve Summers' latest romance book, MR RIGHT ONLINE, will be released on 29 September 2011 by Red Rose Publishing. Still waiting for a cover and hoping for one with a black dachshund puppy.

Blurb: Gillian knows Andy1980 is the guy for her. Smart, sexy, romantic. Trouble is, smart and sexy and romantic are qualities easy to fake in an online relationship. Add to that the fact that he’s younger than her and she’s in a wheelchair, and you get two wrongs that simply can’t make a right… or can they?

Sandra Hyatt (Hyde), 1965-2011

(From the outgoing president of RWNZ:)

It is with deep sadness that I announce that longtime RWNZ member, Sandra Hyde (published as Sandra Hyatt), died in hospital yesterday - Sunday August 21 - after being taken suddenly ill while attending RWNZ's conference in Auckland.

Those of you who saw her at the conference cocktail party on Friday night, her usual bubbly self, will find this news hard to believe. However, as we understand it, Sandra had an undetected cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which would have been present since birth. This weekend, the AVM caused a bleed in her brain. Its location and severity made it inoperable.

As an organisation, we mourn the loss of an RWNZ member renowned for her warmth and generosity, and of a talented writer. As individuals, we mourn the loss of the best kind of friend. Even more, our hearts go out to Sandra's husband Scott Hyde, and their teenagers Sarah and Matthew.

Sandra's funeral will be held this Thursday August 25, at 1pm, at Clevedon Presbyterian Church, 3 Papakura-Clevedon Road (at the roundabout in the middle of Clevedon).

RWNZ would like to put together an album of photos of Sandra for her family - this may be an electronic album, given that many of us will have photos taken on digital cameras and cell phones at resolutions too low for decent printing. If you have any photos, or any questions, please email them to abby@abbygaines.com .
If you have any photos taken on the weekend, those might of use for Sandra's funeral. We would love to receive them as soon as possible - again, please email to abby@abbygaines.com

Thank you and kind regards

Abby Gaines

President, RWNZ Inc.

Speed Dating - How Soon Can You Tell?

When do you know that the guy is Mr Maybe Right, somebody you'd like to date? After a month of friendship? After hooking up at a party? After a one-night stand?

Scientists tell us, that actually you can tell within the first minute, a fraction of a minute maybe. The chemistry is either there, or it's not. That's why speed dating is so popular: instead of spending a whole dinner date with somebody you may or may not fancy, you get to meet ten potential date candidates.

You may have a list of questions to ask them, you might even have a list of requirements in mind. No matter. If the attraction is there, you'll know.

Now, if only there were a research paper to tell us whether a given relationship will last....

EXCERPT - R21 - The Upgrade, Eve Summers

Excerpt

From where he lay on his stomach, naked except for a small towel, Timothy could see the big tranquil blue of the ocean.

“Is this hard enough?” murmured the massage girl in her melodious Pacific accent. Her dark slim fingers pressed into Timothy’s knotted shoulders with startling intensity.

And with a startling aphrodisiac quality.

He couldn’t suppress the groan. “Mmmmm.”

“Good?”

It was bloody perfect. The exotic smell of sandalwood oil seeped into his tired body. Timothy closed his eyes, letting all the stress of the last sixteen months melt away.

Shoulders, back, buttocks. The fingers teased his upper thighs before moving on lower. Calves, feet, toes. The ticklish yet highly arousing spaces between the toes.

It was supposed to be a relaxing massage, yet Timothy’s mind was beginning to turn to matters that he’d had no time for in his busy schedule lately.

3 Things I Didn't Know About Romance Readers

  • Divorced women read far fewer romance novels than single and married women do.
  • Romance readers buy more e-books than any other genre's readers.
  • Romance readers buy more paperback books than e-books.

If you like Linda Howard and Jen Crusie....

I love Linda Howard's novels for the thrilling plots and Jennifer Crusie's humorous dialogues. I've read all their books. Now what?

A quick Google search reveals that Crusie fans should try:
  • Janet Evanovich (yes, although Stephanie Plum is getting stale)
  • Helen Fielding (no, her heroine doesn't grab life by the throat)
  • Sophie Kinsella (yes, although her books as Madeleine Wickham are miles better)
  • Jennifer Weiner (yes to the humour, no to the writing style)
  • Susan Elizabeth Phillips (will try)
  • Katie Fforde (tried but couldn't get into the book).
Linda Howard's fans, meanwhile, should turn to people I've never even heard of, apart from Nora Roberts.

Help, anybody?

My First Kindle

OK, it's official: I'm no longer a Kindle virgin! As of last Saturday, I've seen the Kindle, I've touched the Kindle and I've used the Kindle to read a few pages of text. I've even learned how to look up word definitions!

My first impressions are favourable (now how many of us can say that about our first time, huh?): the Kindle is feather-light and super-easy on the eyes (I mean, it's pretty, but also it doesn't glow the way a monitor does, so you don't strain reading an ebook any more than you would reading a paperback). And I love the online dictionary.

I love it even more that all the Eve Summers book are available in that format.

Will I buy the Kindle this year? Maybe. I'm kind of hoping for a colour and graphic version, because I really love book covers.

Speaking of which.... Check out the Eve Summers Kindle Titles today!

Excerpt - PG - If You Like Pina Coladas, by Eve Summers

Sarah found it in a library copy of Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist”. An ordinary sheet of paper from a spiral notebook.

To the Woman of my Dreams, the note began. If this book spoke to your soul, I’ve been waiting for you since forever. Please leave your reply in the library copy of a particular book. Tip: If you like Piña Coladas...

The bit about the woman of his dreams would have sounded corny, except “The Alchemist” was all about following one’s dream – the journey and the destination.

Sarah felt intrigued. What kind of a man would use a library book the way most people used online dating sites? A fellow booklover, someone who enjoyed puzzles…. Oh, and pop songs.

If you like Piña Coladas.... The tip left Sarah mystified. A book with Piña Colada in the title? Too easy. A book about cocktails? Too lame. A book about an estranged couple who ultimately realize they are meant for each another? True of a gazillion novels.

She consulted the library computer. Who sang the Piña Colada song? Google provided the name Rupert Holmes. As in Conan–Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes? But which book? No, that was a dead end. Sarah limited the search to her local library and typed in Rupert Holmes in the author field. Spot on! Only one title: “Where the Truth Lies”.

Pleased that she had deciphered the brainteaser, Sarah took out an old shopping list from her purse and wrote her own message on the reverse.

I love “The Alchemist”. Have never read “Where the Truth Lies”. I’d like to take it out, so here’s hoping you get this note soon.

She almost left it at that, before the idea of setting up her own riddle sucked her in. I spy with my little eye a book that begins with T–C–O–M. Tip: It’s a kind of magic.

Pina Colada Cupcakes

To celebrate the great sales of my "sweet" e-romance, "If you like Pina Coladas", I made Pina Colada muffins. I used the recipe I found here and I can really recommend them. Ok, mine didn't exactly look like picture on that website... so much so that I didn't photograph mine... but they were totally delicious! And now they are all gone.

EXCERPT - R21 - Elevator With A View, Eve Summers

(By Eve Summers)
...

Miles reached for her hair again and this time he did touch it, light strokes at first, then a handful at a time. ―Soft,‖ he said. She felt a gentle tug and his wolf mouth got closer. ―Spiky.‖ His fingers were in her hair, pinning it up, exposing her neck. The words came out hoarse, squashed with sexual craving. ―Would you offer your throat to a wolf with the red roses?‖

9

That song never failed to set her senses on fire. Her heart still drummed against the cage of her chest, but it wasn‘t a symptom of panic anymore.

―There,‖ he said stepping back. His trailing fingers brushed her nipples. ―I think it worked.‖

It damned well worked… and not only the way he meant. Angelica‘s nipples felt bare without his touch, her stomach knotted with sheer lust. She hadn‘t had sex with anybody except her cheating ex–husband, now over a year ago.

She was on the wrong side of forty. Miles probably still on the right side of thirty. But hell, it was Christmas, and she owed it to herself.

―Would he offer me his mouth?‖ she quoted right back, as though there had been no interruption.

His thumb tilted her face, his forefinger drew a slow teasing line around her lips. She tasted him with the tip of her tongue. Zing! Pure chemistry.

The Spotlight Is On....

The spotlight today is on a fellow Red Rose Publishing author, Carol Preflatish

Love, Lies, Deceit

Yvonne: Carol, please tell us about your book and its main theme.
Carol: "Love, Lies & Deceit" is about international espionage, with a hint of romance between two CIA operatives; one a rookie, the other her training officer.

Yvonne: What makes the hero somebody you'd like to meet?
Carol: I've had so many readers tell me that they love Jason Reid because of his sweet, but determined personality, his patriotism, and his commitment to Julie McBride, his trainee.

Yvonne: How does the heroine change throughout the book?
Carol: Julie starts out as a rookie CIA officer who is just a little unsure of herself, but in the end she shows that her confidence in herself has increased 100% by doing what she can to help save Jason's life and career, while risking her own.

Yvonne: If the book were made into a movie, who should play the heroine?
Carol: It's kind of a toss-up between Kirsten Dunst and Nicole Kidman, but I sort of lean toward Kirsten Dunst.

Yvonne: Tell us something about the book's setting.
Carol: My book has a lot of international travel starting out in Washington, DC, then to Austria, before going on to New York City, and then ending up in Paris, France before coming back to Washington.

Welcome Erotic Writer Jennifer Jakes!

Q: Who are you as an author?
A: As an author, I'm a very "pulled-together" woman who writes erotic western romance.

Q: Who are you at home?
A: At home, I'm a crazed wife and mother wondering if I remembered to thaw something out for dinner and wondering if I can steal 15 minutes to write. LOL

Q: Who is your favorite heroine you've ever written?
A: Well, RAFE'S REDEMPTION is my debut novel and the novel of my heart, so of course I love MAGGIE, but that being said, I'm working on a novella and another full length novel and I think Nora from ALASKAN HEAT is my favorite.

Q: Who would play her in a movie?
A: Nicole Kidman (with her curly red hair).

Q: Who is her hero?
A: Alex O'Loughlin (McGarrett from Hawaii 5-0)

Q: What kind of research do you do for your books?
Well, my family and I are American Civil War re-enactors. So the time I spend encamped is fantastic research. And I read a lot about the time period, everything from how many days did it take to do laundry, to how much a prostitute of the time would have charged.

Q: Do reviews and fans' comments shape the way you write?
A: Oh, yes! I can't think of a nicer compliment than for someone who doesn't have to tell me they like my work (i.e.: my mom) tell me why they enjoyed the book or a particular section of a story:)

Q: Please tell our readers how to find you.
A: Here are the links to my website and my publisher.
http://www.jenniferjakes.com
http://tinyurl.com/4oh5387

Q: Share the blurb for RAFE'S REDEMPTION?
A:

He rode into town to buy supplies, not a woman.
For hunted recluse Rafe McBride, the raven-haired beauty on the auction block  is exactly what he doesn't need. A dependent woman will be another clue his vengeful stepbrother can use to find and kill him. But Rafe's conscience won't let him leave another innocent's virginity to the riff-raff bidding. He buys her, promising to return her to St. Louis untouched. He only prays the impending blizzard holds off before her sultry beauty breaks his willpower.
She wanted freedom, not a lover.

Especially when the rugged mountain man looks like sin and danger rolled into one. But a blizzard and temptation thrust them together, and Maggie yearns to explore her smoldering passion for Rafe.

Introducing a fellow Red Rose Author

The Outpost by J. H. Bográn

Q: What's the book's main theme?
A: It's a Sci-fi short.

Q: I love Sci-fi! What makes the hero somebody you'd like to meet?
Karl Jackson is an astro-engineer facing disaster as his small ship is coming apart. His attitude is the right one for somebody I'd like next to me in case of trouble.

Q: How does the heroine change throughout the book?
A: Sorry, this short sci-fi doesn´t have a heroine.

Q: Typical "male" sci-fi then, LOL (see footnote). If the book were made into a movie, who should play the hero?
A: Matt Leblanc would play a great Karl Jackson.

Q: Tell us something about the book's setting.
A: In a small station in the edge of the solar system, 2 man monitor the space traffic when systems begin to crash one after another, for no apparent reason. Will they be able to fix it in time or is something else lurking around?

Blurb:

Murphy’s Law, is there anything else that can go wrong?
Karl Jackson and Joseph Doyle are stationed aboard Track 7, an outpost monitoring the traffic in and out of the solar system. When Karl wakes up with his nose pressed against a metal plank, he soon realizes that the lack of gravity is only the beginning of his problems.

(*Footnote: Eve Summers writes "female" sci-fi.)

Did you know?

  • "I want to know what love is", a romantic novella by Eve Summers, owes its title to a 1980s song by Foreigner. Listen to it on youtube.
  • The novella is now available on the Kindle.
  • The book cover is inspired by the week Eve Summers spent diving in Tahiti.
